What Sets Structural Steel Fabrication Professionals Apart From More Typical Metal Fabrication Professionals?

Posted on: 27 April 2021

There are many metal fabrication professionals out there who do all types of different jobs with metal. Some do more specialized work than others, for example. Structural steel fabrication professionals who typically work with structural steel might be a bit different professionally from typical metal fabrication professionals. These are some of the differences that you might notice.

They're Typically Accustomed to Working Off-Site

Although many people who work in the metal fabrication industry will sometimes travel to help with welding jobs and other assorted things, these professionals typically work primarily in their shops. Structural steel fabrication professionals, on the other hand, are typically accustomed to working off-site. For example, in many cases, their jobs involve working on construction sites where buildings are being built from structural steel.

They Have Different Equipment

Although structural steel fabrication professionals and other metal fabrication professionals might have a lot of the same equipment, there are often some differences, too. Bigger saws, different types of welding machines, and other equipment might be different. Additionally, since structural steel fabrication professionals often have to work at heights — while this usually isn't the case for all metal fabrication professionals — they also typically have access to scaffolds, boom trucks, scissor lifts, and other equipment that allows them to work at heights when they are working on big structures that are made out of steel.

They May Be More Well-Aware of Building Codes and Requirements

Metal fabrication professionals often don't really have to worry about building code requirements and regulations. On the other hand, the structural steel fabrication professionals who help with building structural steel buildings do, in fact, typically have to be educated about these things. After all, they have to make sure that the buildings that they construct for their customers will pass inspections and will hold up well.

They're Often Used to Working With Other Professionals

When a structural steel structure is being built, the professionals who are working on the project might also have to work with a general contractor, electricians, and others who might be involved in the building project. This often is not the case for metal fabrication professionals who might be accustomed to working in a shop with others who work for the same company.

They Typically Have Access to Structural Steel

While the average metal fabrication professional might have access to sheet metal and other similar materials, they might not have access to structural steel. Structural steel fabrication professionals, of course, typically know about the best places to purchase high-quality structural steel that can be used for heavy-duty building projects of all different types.

My Manufacturing Blog

The world of manufacturing is fascinating. I was first introduced to this world by my uncle who works at a local manufacturing plant. While I was still at school, my uncle invited me to attend work with him as part of my work experience placement. I was away on my work experience for two weeks and I can honestly say that I loved every minute of it. Since that time, I had been having long chats with my uncle so I could learn all I needed to know about the industrial and manufacturing sector. I decided to start this blog so I could share some of my new-found knowledge.
