Water Tank Maintenance and Care Tips for Homeowners

Posted on: 23 September 2019

Water tanks are a crucial investment, especially for people who live in areas that experience water problems. The tank can be used to store rainwater or the water a supply tank delivers at your premises. Unfortunately, most people don't know that owning a tank isn't a guarantee that you'll have clean and drinkable water when you need it. Proper maintenance is necessary to make sure the water you store in the tank is pure and readily usable when the need arises. This post shares key care tips to keep water in your tank clean.

Consider a care plan before buying the tank

Since water tanks come in a wide range of features and materials, be sure to determine your requirements even before you purchase the tank. The material, opening and size will have an impact on how you maintain or clean the tank.

Also, consider where the tank will be installed, be it underground or in the yard. If you choose to procure a plastic water tank, make sure it can keep sunlight out. The growth of algae is fostered by sunlight, and it causes disease in animals and humans. A black-out colour is better because it eliminates the penetration of the sunlight into the water, preventing algae growth in the tank.

Design a maintenance routine

With proper maintenance, you can ensure that water in the tank isn't contaminated. Once you put water into the tank, ensure the tank remains covered. A tightly fitting cover is ideal since it keeps out animals, debris, sunlight and organic waste. The tank should also be checked for damages and be repaired immediately. Any sludge and sediment that builds up at the bottom should be removed—how frequent this is done will depend on how well you maintain the tank.

If your water tank stores rainwater, consider keeping the gutters and roof clean. Any branches around the area should be cut to ensure animals don't get to the roof. Also, consider filtering the water before it's stored in the tank. Just ensure the filter is also debris-free to avoid closing the opening.

Clean the tank thoroughly

Be sure to clean and disinfect your water tank thoroughly every year. The technique you use depends on the kind of tank, although the general process involves using bleach and water. This kills all the harmful bacteria and eliminates debris. Your tank should be cleaned:

  • After repairing an old water supply
  • When a new water supply is constructed
  • If you haven't used the water system for months
  • When a bacteria test confirms that the stored water is contaminated

My Manufacturing Blog

The world of manufacturing is fascinating. I was first introduced to this world by my uncle who works at a local manufacturing plant. While I was still at school, my uncle invited me to attend work with him as part of my work experience placement. I was away on my work experience for two weeks and I can honestly say that I loved every minute of it. Since that time, I had been having long chats with my uncle so I could learn all I needed to know about the industrial and manufacturing sector. I decided to start this blog so I could share some of my new-found knowledge.
